Glass processors and installers could face liabilities: warning

Bohle has warned that glass processors and installers could face liabilities and possible prosecution for supply of products outside specification.

According to Bohle, over-reliance on the integrity of their supply chain, could mean that glass processors and installers are inadvertently supplying the wrong specification of glass or insulated units into the UK construction industry.

The glass consumables, tools and machinery supplier warns that this could lead to prosecution and liabilities under Building Regulations – even where errors are genuine.

Dave Broxton, Managing Director, Bohle, said: “We’re not suggesting for a moment that any glass processor or installation business would ever deliberately supply the wrong specification of glass but errors do happen.  When they do, it can be very difficult to distinguish the properties of one type of glass from another – particularly where a PVB interlayer or coating is being used.”

Broxton continues: “If and where these errors occur, the potential liabilities are significant. There are clearly liabilities under building control but the consequences and ramifications go far beyond Building Regs. and to fundamental issues of public safety.  Given this, it makes sense to have an insurance policy.”

Bohle provides a potential solution in the Glass Buddy and Glass Buddy Plus, which eliminate the risk of inaccurate supply of product by providing an instant analysis of glass properties ahead of manufacture or installation.

Capable of analysis of single pane through to laminated or insulated glass units, Glass Buddy uses laser technology to deliver an instant analysis of glass properties. This includes thickness, the structure of the pane, the Low-E coating, PVB interlays and their position to the accuracy of 0.1mm.

Broxton added: “Glass Buddy is a very affordable piece of equipment but one, which delivers peace of mind by providing an on the spot and precise analysis of glass properties.

“Errors in labelling can occur and if they’re not picked up early, the cost of putting them right once a product has been installed or because of the legal liabilities that go with it, can be huge.

“Glass buddy eliminates doubt and in doing so eliminates risk and your potential liabilities as manufacturer or supplier.”
